Wise up!

Get Wisdom! is the present sermon series at my church looking at the book of Proverbs.
We started off with Why Get Wisdom? to introduce the series and to look at what wisdom means according to the world and what it means according to the bible.

The Free Dictionary describes wisdom as follows.

wis·dom (wzdm)
n.
1. The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight.
2. Common sense; good judgment: "It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things" Henry David Thoreau.
3. a. The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge: "In those homely sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations" Maya Angelou.
b. Wise teachings of the ancient sages.
4. A wise outlook, plan, or course of action.
5. Wisdom Bible Wisdom of Solomon.

The biblical definition is a little different.
Wisdom: To see everything in life the way God sees it. It is the place from where all life change begins.

How much of a gambler are you? Do you like to play the "long shot" or the "sure thing"? Are you presently making the ultimate wager with your own life? What kind of bet would you make with Pascal's Wager?

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was a French mathematician, physicist and religious philosopher who put forth the proposition:

"...that it is a better "bet" to believe that God exists than not to believe, because the expected value of believing (which Pascal assessed as infinite) is always greater than the expected value of not believing."

It works like this:

My New Year's Resolution or The New Hamster in My Bucket

Happy New Year and welcome to my first blog post.




What does a New Year's Resolution have to do with a hamster in a bucket? Well, that goes back to "What my pastor said last Sunday" or W.M.P.S.L.S.

In his quest for bad sermon illustrations he likened our brains to buckets and our memories to hamsters. Every time we have something to remember we take that hamster and place it in our bucket. It works quite well when we are young. Our buckets are big and our hamsters are few. However, as we get older, our bucket gets smaller and our hamsters get more numerous, making it much more difficult to keep them in the bucket.

My "car key location" hamster disappeared before work just last week. I have handed all of my "family birthday" hamsters over to my wife's care. And as a precautionary measure, I had my "wedding anniversary" hamster glued to the side of my bucket a few years back and has been unable to escape for the past 8 years.

The theme of my pastor's sermon was "A Memory That God Loves" based on Deuteronomy 8: 1-20. The Israelites were at the edge of the promised land and Moses was exhorting them to remember the Lord, not just in thought, but in deed as well; outlining the benefits and the consequences of heeding or ignoring this command.

How do we "Remember the Lord"? (v 6-10)

1. We delight in His Word.


2. We lift Him up.


3. We praise His deeds.

How do we "Forget the Lord"? (v 11-20)

1. We ignore His Word.


2. We lift up ourselves.


3. We hijack His deeds.
   

We can resolve to quit smoking or drinking, or to get more exercise and lose weight. They are very worthy goals and would provide many healthy benefits. But to really make a difference in every aspect of our lives, perhaps to resolve to "remember the Lord" in thought and deed in 2008 should be the order of the day.

I know it's the new hamster in my bucket for 2008.
